What you will learn

Your objective. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explain nostro reconciliation. A nostro account is an account that a bank holds with another bank in a foreign currency, and its name comes from the Latin word for ours, because the money in it belongs to the holding bank.

Why it matters. This matters because operations is where payments are reconciled, investigated and fixed. The work in this lesson is what keeps the money right.

Chapter objective: Learner performs payment reconciliation, matching bank statements to internal records, identifying breaks, and resolving differences with clear actions and evidence. Learner applies this skill in realistic banking scenarios, with clear examples and correct terminology throughout.

Key learning points

  • Nostro account
  • Nostro statement
  • Statement line matching
  • Nostro break appears when a statement line
  • Nostro reconciliation
  • Discipline keeps the bank's view

Key terms

Nostro reconciliation: Reconciliation of a bank nostro account against the statement received from the correspondent bank. Operations teams match each nostro entry to a statement entry, investigate breaks, and confirm the...

Reconciliation: The process of comparing records from two sources, such as a bank statement and an internal ledger, to confirm they agree.

Value date: The date on which funds become available to the beneficiary and on which interest starts to accrue. It is the date used for settlement and for nostro posting.

Exercise

Scenario: you are a reconciliation analyst. Your bank sent a payment of USD 10,000 to a supplier, but the supplier says it received USD 10,000 twice. Investigate: determine whether this is a duplicate payment, identify how the duplicate happened, and state the action to recover the funds. The payment was sent on 3 November 2026 with reference PAY-20261103-001 and UETR 7f8a9b2c-3d4e-5f6a-7b8c-9d0e1f2a3b4c.

The bank records show two payments: first payment on 3 November, reference PAY-20261103-001, UETR 7f8a9b2c-3d4e-5f6a-7b8c-9d0e1f2a3b4c, amount USD 10,000, status ACCC (settlement completed, creditor account credited). Second payment on 3 November, reference PAY-20261103-001, UETR 7f8a9b2c-3d4e-5f6a-7b8c-9d0e1f2a3b4c, amount USD 10,000, status ACCC. The customer says it only instructed one payment. The bank system shows the payment was submitted once by the customer, but the payment hub shows two executions. The Idempotency-Key used was idem-20261103-001 for both executions.

  1. What to do. Determine whether this is a duplicate payment. Identify the root cause: was it a customer error, a system retry, an idempotency failure, or a hub error? Then state the recovery action and the control to prevent recurrence.

Correct result. Yes, this is a duplicate payment. The two payments have the same reference, the same UETR, the same amount, and the same value date, so they are the same payment executed twice. Root cause: the Idempotency-Key was the same for both executions (idem-20261103-001), but the hub executed the payment twice instead of returning the original response for the second request. This is an idempotency failure: the hub should have recognised the second request as a retry with the same key and returned the original response without executing again. The customer submitted the payment once, so it is not a customer error. The hub executed twice, so it is a system error. Recovery action: send a recall request (camt.056) to the beneficiary bank asking for the return of the duplicate USD 10,000, citing the duplicate UETR and reference, and stating that the payment was executed twice in error. If the beneficiary agrees, the funds are returned via a pacs.004 with reason code AM05 (duplicate payment). If the beneficiary does not agree, escalate through the correspondent bank and, if necessary, through the scheme. Control to prevent recurrence: fix the hub idempotency check so that a second request with the same Idempotency-Key returns the original response and does not execute again, and add a duplicate detection check that flags any payment with the same reference, amount, value date and beneficiary as a potential duplicate before execution. Worked reasoning: the UETR is the unique end to end reference for the payment, so two payments with the same UETR are the same payment. The Idempotency-Key is the control that should have prevented the second execution, so its failure is the root cause.

Why. Hint 1: compare the UETR, the reference, the amount and the value date; if they all match, it is a duplicate, not two separate payments. Hint 2: check the Idempotency-Key; if it is the same for both executions, the idempotency control failed. Hint 3: the recovery is a recall (camt.056), not a reversal, because the payment has already settled. The worked explanation shows the duplicate detection discipline: match on the unique identifiers first, then find the root cause in the control that should have prevented it, then recover and fix the control.

Practice question

At the end of the day the bank ledger shows 50 payments sent but the clearing statement shows 49 received. What is the correct first step?

Takeaway and next step

What to remember

A statement debit with no internal entry may mean the correspondent executed a payment the bank never instructed, or deducted a fee the bank did not expect, or processed a duplicate.

Reconcile the payment in this lesson against its statement and find the break.

A nostro account is an account that a bank holds with another bank in a foreign currency, and its name comes from the Latin word for ours, because the money in it belongs to the holding bank. For example, a bank in Mumbai that needs to make USD payments holds a USD nostro account with a correspondent bank in New York, such as JPMorgan Chase. When the Mumbai bank sends a USD payment, it debits its own internal nostro ledger and instructs the correspondent to debit the real account and pay the beneficiary. The correspondent then sends a statement, usually as a camt.053 message, listing every debit and credit that actually happened on that account. The nostro statement is the independent evidence against which the bank proves its own records, so its arrival and loading must be controlled carefully. Most correspondent banks send a camt.053 statement every business day, covering the previous day, and some send intraday camt.052 reports as well. The reconciliation team loads the statement into the reconciliation system, checks that the opening balance matches the previous closing balance, and confirms that the statement is complete before matching begins. If the opening balance does not agree, matching cannot start, because every later difference may be caused by that opening gap rather than by a real payment problem. Matching itself compares each statement line against an internal ledger entry using the payment reference, the amount, the currency, and the value date. A clean match occurs when a USD 75,000 debit on the statement, dated 4 November 2026, corresponds exactly to a USD 75,000 internal entry with the same reference and the same value date. The reconciliation engine then marks both sides as matched and removes them from the open items list. Modern engines also tolerate small differences, such as a correspondent fee of USD 15 deducted from a USD 75,000 payment, by matching on the net amount and posting the fee to a separate charges account. A nostro break appears when a statement line has no internal match, or an internal entry has no statement line, and each type of break points to a different problem. A statement debit with no internal entry may mean the correspondent executed a payment the bank never instructed, or deducted a fee the bank did not expect, or processed a duplicate. An internal entry with no statement line may mean the payment is still in transit, the correspondent has not yet processed it, or the instruction never reached the correspondent at all. The age of the break matters greatly, because a one-day-old break is usually timing, while a break older than five days usually signals a genuine error. Nostro reconciliation has a direct effect on liquidity and on the bank's ability to make further payments, which is why it is performed daily and never left to accumulate. If a bank believes its USD nostro balance is USD 12 million but the correspondent statement shows USD 11.4 million, the bank has USD 600,000 less available than it thought, and it may fail to fund the next day's payments. Large banks therefore reconcile their major nostro accounts every morning before the payment day begins, and they escalate any break above a threshold, such as USD 50,000, to the payments operations manager immediately. That discipline keeps the bank's view of its own money honest.
