Exercise

A shop in São Paulo sells goods for BRL 3,600 on a Saturday at 14:00 and the customer pays by Pix, scanning the shop QR code. Work out the journey.

Use Pix key lookup, name confirmation, and settlement through the Banco Central do Brasil Instant Payment System, SPI.

  1. What to do. State the cost to the customer, when the shop is credited, and what happens if the payment is fraud.

Correct result. The customer bank looks up the QR code, shows the shop name, the customer confirms, the shop is credited BRL 3,600 at 14:00:04 at no cost to the customer, and fraud is handled by the MED special return mechanism if reported quickly.

Why. Pix is a central bank system with a key directory, and the key is the addressing.

Pix is Brazil's instant payment system, launched by the Banco Central do Brasil in November 2020, and it lets any person or business send money instantly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, using a key instead of an account number. A Pix key can be a CPF or CNPJ number, an email address, a mobile phone number or a random key, and the payer enters the key, sees the recipient name, confirms, and the money moves in seconds, settled in central bank money through the Banco Central do Brasil Instant Payment System, known as SPI. Pix is free for individuals, and it has become the most used payment method in Brazil within a few years. Source: Banco Central do Brasil, Pix. Why Pix exists is that Brazil wanted a payment system that was instant, free for people, and open to every bank, fintech and payment institution, not just the large banks. Before Pix, a TED transfer took hours and cost a fee, a DOC transfer took a day, and a boleto took days, so small businesses waited for their money and individuals paid fees to move their own money. Pix answers by settling each payment individually in seconds, with no fee for individuals, and by letting any licensed institution join, so a customer of a small fintech can pay a customer of a large bank instantly, and the competition is on service, not on access to the rail. The parties are the payer and the payee, their payment institutions, which must be Pix participants, the Banco Central do Brasil, which operates Pix and the SPI settlement system, and the key directory, which maps each Pix key to an account. The key is the innovation: the payer does not need to know the payee bank, branch or account number, only the key, and the directory resolves it in real time. The payer institution shows the payee name before confirmation, which is the control that prevents most mistaken payments, and the payee institution credits the account within seconds of settlement. How it works is shown by a worked example. A shop owner in São Paulo sells goods for BRL 3,600 to a customer who pays by Pix, scanning the shop QR code at 14:00 on a Saturday. The customer bank looks up the QR code, shows the shop name, the customer confirms, and the payment travels through Pix, settles in SPI, and the shop account is credited BRL 3,600 at 14:00:04, four seconds later. The shop owner sees the credit on Saturday, not Monday, and can pay the supplier the same day. The payment cost the customer nothing, and the shop pays a small fee to its own institution, far less than a card payment would have cost, which is why Brazilian merchants prefer Pix to cards for many sales. On success the payment is final in seconds, the receiver can use the money immediately, and the cost is low or zero, so the system is used for everything from a BRL 10 coffee to a BRL 50,000 supplier payment. On failure the payment can be rejected, for example because the key is not registered or the account is closed, and the rejection is immediate, so the payer knows at once. The failure that matters most is fraud, because Pix is instant and final, so a fraudster who tricks a customer into sending money by Pix has the money in seconds, and the recovery is a special return mechanism, the MED, Mecanismo Especial de Devolução, which lets the receiving institution freeze the funds if the fraud is reported quickly, but only if the money is still in the account. The data in a Pix payment is the payer and payee identification, the Pix key, the amount in Brazilian reais, and the transaction identification, plus an optional description. The key is the field that matters most, because a key that is mistyped or that points to the wrong account sends the money to the wrong person, and the name shown before confirmation is the only control. A BA must specify the key lookup, the name confirmation, the limits, the night-time limits, which are lower than daytime limits for individuals, and the fraud reporting and return process, because each of those is a customer promise and a regulatory requirement. Edge cases show the limits. Pix has per-transaction and daily limits set by each institution, and night-time limits are lower, so a BRL 20,000 payment that works at noon may be blocked at 23:00, and the customer must be told why. A Pix key can be transferred between institutions, and if the transfer is not completed, payments may go to the old account, so the transfer process must be tested. A business that receives thousands of Pix payments a day needs automatic reconciliation by transaction identification, because manual matching of thousands of instant payments is impossible, and the requirement must specify the reconciliation feed. The effect on the bank or fintech is a service that customers demand, and a reduction in cash and card volume, because customers who can pay instantly for free will not pay a fee to wait. The effect on the customer is free, instant payments at any hour, which has changed how Brazilians pay for everything, from a market stall to a supplier invoice. The effect on operations is a 24/7 service with fraud screening in milliseconds, a night-time limit regime to manage, and a fraud return process that must act within hours, because the money moves in seconds and the fraudster moves it on just as fast. What a BA, PO or SME must understand is that Pix is a central bank system with a key directory, and the key is the addressing, the name confirmation is the control, and the instant settlement is the value. The requirement must name the key types, the confirmation step, the limits including night-time limits, the QR code handling, the reconciliation feed and the fraud return process. The test is to send one payment by key, check that the name was shown before confirmation, that the credit arrived in seconds, and that the transaction can be reconciled, because if any of those fails, the service is not working.
