Reconciliation War Room

Reconcile one business day of payments across four sources: payment instructions, clearing records, settlement records and bank statement entries. Value date: 5 November 2026. Find every break, categorise it, choose the right resolution, and watch the match rate recover as you clear the exceptions. All data is synthetic and for education only. Nothing here connects to a real banking system and nothing moves real money.

Matching rules. Match on the payment reference first. Then the amount must match exactly, with no tolerance, so an amount difference is a real break. The currency must match. The value date must match within one business day: a one-day difference is a timing difference, not a break, but it must be flagged and confirmed. A record with no counterpart in the other sources is missing. The same reference appearing twice in one source is a duplicate. A payment that cleared but did not settle, or settled for a different amount, is a settlement discrepancy. Apply these rules to every item below.
How to play. Each exception is worth 20 points: 10 points for the correct category and 10 points for the correct resolution action. Matched items need no action. There are 14 exceptions, so the total is 280 points. Click any item to open the four-way comparison, categorise it, then pick a resolution. Your best score is saved in this browser only.

Teaching note. This exercise is simplified for learning. Real reconciliation also covers fees, charges, partial settlements, returns and multi-day value date chains, and real breaks need approval and audit trails before any manual posting. Amounts here match exactly with no tolerance, which is stricter than some real operations that allow small rounding tolerances. Check current scheme and bank practice before relying on any of this in live work.
